Understanding How to Boost Senior Health

AgingPopulation-SmoothTransitionsAZUnderstanding the proportion of baby boomers to the rest of the population in the United States, helps you understand that we are an aging nation. Right now we have a large population of seniors in our country who continue to increase in age, and who would like to remain healthy while they do so.

In today’s world, people are living longer than ever before…but are they living healthier? Living longer isn’t such a great deal if you don’t have your health.

We realize that there are some health issues that we don’t have a lot of control over such as cancer or dementia, but for many other ailments a healthy lifestyle can make a big difference.

Common changes during the aging process:

These changes are a natural part of growing older, and we each experience them differently, and in our own way.

  1. Beginning with your brain and nervous system, aging can cause changes in memory and reflexes. This doesn’t mean everyone is going to get dementia, but it does mean that there will be at least some slight forgetfulness.
  2. Bones often become more fragile and thinner, which makes falling and broken bones a big risk.
  3. Aging often causes problems with the digestive system, causing constipation and its associated discomforts.
  4. As you age, the skin often dries out and loses its elasticity, causing wrinkles and sagging.
  5. An aging heart can become slightly enlarged and the heart rate may decrease.

Although these changes are expected and natural, there are ways an aging body can be protected so it can keep serving you for many years to come.

Health tips for seniors to thrive and survive…

Whether your senior led a healthy lifestyle when they were younger or not, it’s never too late to begin new habits such as these:

  • UseYourBody-SmoothTranisitionsAZProtect your heart by staying physically active and getting regular exercise. Unless your body is used to a more rigorous workout, low impact exercises, like walking or swimming, are typically the best,. Get your heart pumping and keep your body moving…that old saying “Use it or lose it” is right on.
  • Eat a well-balanced, healthy diet – foods that are high in fiber and low in fat and cholesterol. This will protect your heart, aid your digestive system and help keep your blood pressure down.
  • If you’re a smoker stop, which will help protect your lungs, your heart, your skin and help prevent strokes.
  • Be sure to have regular check-ups, including physical, dental and eyes.
  • Develop a plan to manage medications so they are not forgotten or taken incorrectly.
  • Protect your skin whenever going out in the sun for periods of time by using sunscreen and wearing hats.
