https://www.leisurecare.com/resources/friends-senior-living/So many seniors move into senior living communities each year…is this your year? Maybe you have already made the move…are you happy?

Moving into a senior community is a big deal,

  • It’s a lot of work
  • It’s hard to do the downsizing that is necessary
  • It’s often hard to choose the right community for you
  • It can also feel hard to feel like you fit in

So what can you do?

Let’s make some friends…

Next to family, friends are our greatest source of fun and happiness, but did you also know that having good friends will help…

  • boost your self esteem and fight depression
  • support good health. by positively affecting your immune system, and lowering your blood pressure
  • and possibly prevent dementia.

So, what are some of the best ways you can make new friends?

CommonInterests-SmoothTransitionsAZMaking friends in a senior community should be relatively easy…everyone that lives there is about the same age, and can eat at the same time in the same dining room. But here are a few more ideas to boost your social life:

    1. Regularly participate in activities sponsored by the activity team…there will be all types of things going on each day, but you don’t have to go to every one (unless you want to), Choose the ones you are interested in and attend regularly. What’s great about these activities is that your are sure to meet others that share your same interest…just the beginning of new friendships.
    2. You’re not the only new resident, keep your eyes open for other new residents. They are possibly feeling lonely too. Take a moment, and a bit of courage, to introduce yourself, and navigate your new worlds together.
    3. If there is a resident welcoming committee…join it, you’ll have the pleasure of welcoming every new resident.
    4. Invite people to stop by your place for a piece of cake, a cup of coffee and a visit. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just welcoming .
    5. MakeeachMeal Fun-SmoothTransitionsAZMake your meals social events, plan to have a meal at a certain time in the dining room, invite your friends and don’t forget to include people you’ve never invited before…they will be your future friends. There is no better time than meal time to socialize, enjoy each other’s company and really get to know one another.
